The Importance of Quality USB Cables

Welcome to a brand new series—one that’s going to feel a little different. Around here, we’re all about keeping the vibes positive and encouraging. But let’s be honest: sometimes, we need to call out the things we shouldn’t be doing. That’s what this series is all about—learning through a little tough love (with a smile, of course). And what better way to kick things off than with one of the most overlooked yet critical components of any playback rig: the USB cable.

If playback is an instrument—and we all know it is—then having a backup plan isn’t optional. That’s why we invested in tools like the PlayAUDIO1U to build a fully redundant system. So here’s the question: if we’re taking our setup that seriously, why are we still rummaging through the glovebox of a 1988 Honda Civic looking for a USB cable to use on stage?

Playback is central to your live show. Your whole setup depends on it. Yet some of us trust that crucial connection to a cheap, worn-out cable that’s been sitting in a drawer for years. That’s not a good idea.

So let’s treat USB cables with the same level of respect we’d give guitar strings. As a guitar player, you wouldn’t show up without extra strings or a backup guitar. Let’s carry that mindset into how we handle USB connections for playback.

Use High-Quality Cables

First and foremost, don’t just grab any random cable you can find. Use good-quality USB cables—ideally the ones that came with your PlayAUDIO1U. That’s what I use. They’re reliable and tested for performance!

If you want to invest in higher-end cables that you’ve researched and trust, that’s great too. But the takeaway here is simple: don’t cut corners. Make sure your cable from your PlayAUDIO1U to your computer is solid.

Always Have Backups

Even high-quality cables can fail. Maybe a crew member accidentally yanks it during load-out, or it gets crushed by a road case. Whatever the case, don’t rely on a single cable.

I keep dedicated PlayAUDIO1U cables in my rack, and I also store extras in a Pelican case and even on the tour bus. Have backups—and make sure they’re easily accessible when you need them.

Use a Direct Connection Whenever Possible

Whenever possible, avoid using hubs or adapters. Make a direct USB-C connection from your PlayAUDIO1U to your computer. That’s always going to be the most stable and reliable option.

If your setup requires a hub or adapter, go for powered USB hubs and high-quality adapters. Ideally, use the ones that came with your PlayAUDIO1U. Still, if you can, reserve one port on your computer for a direct connection to your interface and plug everything else into a hub.

Whatever your configuration, try to eliminate as many potential points of failure as you can.

Don’t Let a Cable Ruin Your Show

Playback is too important to risk. So treat your USB cables like guitar strings—essential gear that deserves your attention and investment!
