Quick Start Guide: Your First Steps with the mioXL

So, you've just bought a mioXL, and you're eager to get it connected and working with your DAW as quickly as possible! In this article, we'll walk you through a straightforward setup process that enables you to integrate your mioXL into your studio or performance setup without any extra hassle.

Connecting the mioXL to You Computer via USB

To start, connect the mioXL to your computer using a USB cable. Look for the "USB-DAW" connection on the front of the mioXL, and connect one end of your USB cable there, with the other end going into a USB port on your computer. This connection gives immediate access to the mioXL’s capabilities in your DAW without needing extra software or drivers.

We’ll be using Ableton Live as an example, but these steps apply to any DAW that supports MIDI. Once connected, power up the mioXL, and you’re ready to configure it in your DAW.

Accessing MIDI Inputs in Your DAW

After plugging in the mioXL, open your DAW’s MIDI preferences. Here, you should see the mioXL listed with several MIDI inputs. You’ll notice it offers eight 5-pin DIN connections labeled DIN 1 through DIN 8. To make a connection, simply plug a 5-pin MIDI cable from your instrument or controller into one of the DIN ports on the mioXL. These inputs will automatically appear in your DAW as DIN 1 through DIN 8, which means there’s no need to label or install drivers for each connection, as long as your device is class compliant MIDI.

This is particularly helpful for users with MIDI-enabled hardware who want quick, plug-and-play functionality without setup delays. Just plug in your gear, and the mioXL handles the rest!

USB Host Connections for MIDI Controllers

The mioXL also has extensive USB host capabilities, allowing you to connect multiple USB MIDI controllers. By default, the mioXL displays seven USB host connections as "Host 1" through "Host 7" in your DAW. To make these connections, plug each USB MIDI device into one of the mioXL's USB ports, either on the front or back panel.

For those with multiple controllers, this feature allows each device to appear in your DAW in the order it’s plugged in. However, if you want to set a specific configuration for your devices, download the free iConnectivity software Auracle for X-Series. This allows you to make USB host port reservations, ensuring each MIDI controller retains the same position every time it’s connected.

Advanced Program Change Capabilities

If you need to change presets or configurations quickly, the mioXL offers program change capabilities. By sending program changes from the output of your DAW, you can select and change different presets on your device via the mioXL. This feature is especially useful for live performers needing rapid preset changes in their setup during a performance.

This feature is only available when your computer is connected via the USB-DAW port on the front the mioXL. For further, more in depth customization, you can configure and save presets using Auracle for X-Series, ensuring you always have access to your preferred setup without needing to connect to a computer!

Customize Your Workflow

The mioXL is a versatile and powerful tool for any music production environment, combining immediate plug-and-play functionality with advanced customization when used in tandem with iConnectivity Auracle for X-Series. It allows musicians and producers to focus on creativity without technical obstacles, seamlessly integrating MIDI controllers and enabling dynamic preset adjustments.
